Wine Advocate: " Entirely sourced in the volcanic grands crus Stromberg and Felsenberg, the 2015 Riesling Trocken Vulkangestein is from vines that are 30+ years old. It delivers much more quality than you might expect from the name that doesn't communicate terroir but soil character. The wine opens ripe, intense and untamed, but pure and minerally/smoky on the nose. On the palate, this is a very clear, bright and racy Riesling with power, extract and intensity as well as a grip and serious structure. The wine is lean and precise but also rich and powerful, and its salinity is really remarkable. Keep it for another three years or so to gain all its finesse." 91/100pts

John Gilman (View from the Cellar): "The 2015 Vulkangestein Riesling Trocken, which is the selection of younger vines from the estate’s volcanic soil grand crus, is really a classy bottle this year. The blend is a fifty-fifty mix of fruit from Felsenberg and Stromberg, with the vines averaging between thirty-five and forty years of age, so this is not a young vine cuvée. The final analysis had not yet been done for the 2015ers, but Tim Fröhlich imagined this would end up carrying about four grams per liter of residual sugar. The bouquet jumps from the glass in a fine blend of lemon peel, grapefruit, plenty of smokiness, wild yeasts and stony soil tones. On the palate the wine is deep, fullish, pure on the attack and rock solid at the core, with excellent, ripe acids and superb backend cut and grip on the long finish. A complete and very classy wine. 2018-2040. ” 91 points
